Budgeting with room to breathe.
One-on-one coaching to help you build a YNAB budget that actually holds up — so money stops feeling like a fight and starts giving you margin.
Margin isn't budgeting software — you keep your own YNAB account, and I coach you through using it.
You might be exactly who this is for.
You've downloaded YNAB three times. Deleted it twice.
You make decent money and somehow it's gone by the 20th — and you genuinely don't know where.
You and your partner fight about money in the same three ways, on a loop.
You've got a spreadsheet from a few years ago with four days of data in it, and a wave of guilt every time you open it.
If any of that landed, you're not behind some curve everyone else figured out — I spent years there myself before it clicked. That's exactly what coaching is for.
Margin isn't a budget category. It's the whole point.
In YNAB, there's a rule most people skip past: get a month ahead. Once you're spending money you earned last month instead of this week's paycheck, you've created a gap — a buffer between when money comes in and when it goes out.
That gap is your margin. YNAB has a number for it: Age of MoneyThe number of days between when you earned a dollar and when you spend it. Higher means you're spending money you earned further in the past — more buffer, less paycheck-to-paycheck.. It's the clearest measurement of breathing room your budget can give you.
This isn't a rich-person thing. Margin scales with whatever you make — it might be $50 of breathing room on one budget and $5,000 on another. The size looks different at every income level; the habit of building it on purpose doesn't.
Coaching is how we build that gap on purpose, instead of hoping it shows up on its own — and money stress has a way of leaking into everything else, so when it eases up, you tend to feel it in more than just your budget.
earned
stress-free
This gap is what YNAB calls Age of Money — an illustration of the space between earning a dollar and spending it, not a precise score to chase. The wider that gap, the more margin you're carrying.
Less scrambling before payday, more room to absorb a surprise expense.
One less thing running in the background of every decision you make.
More capacity left over for the people and things that actually matter to you.
What's your margin right now?
Drag the sliders — rough numbers are fine, this is just to give you a feel for it, not a real budget.
Your budget shouldn't feel like a second job.
Most people don't quit YNAB because the tool is broken. They quit because no one showed them how to make it fit their actual life.
Budgeting alone
- –You set it up once, then avoid opening the app
- –Categories don't match how you actually spend
- –One bad week and the whole budget falls apart
- –You're guessing whether you're "doing it right"
Budgeting with a coach
- +A budget built around your real spending, not a template
- +Someone to troubleshoot the weeks that go sideways
- +Regular check-ins that keep it honest and current
- +A clear, growing number for what's actually left over
Coaching that fits where you're starting from.
Whether you need a single reset or ongoing support, coaching is built around your budget — not a one-size-fits-all course.
Coaching happens inside your own YNAB account — there's no separate Margin app or dashboard to learn.

I've lived the budget I now help you build.
I'm Cody. I didn't start out good with money. I started YNAB the way a lot of people do — overwhelmed, behind, and pretty sure I was doing it wrong. It took real trial and error, a few blown budgets, and a slow rebuild before it finally clicked, with my wife Katelyn working through it right alongside me.
That's the part most guides skip. Coaching with Margin isn't theory — it's everything I wish someone had walked me through, applied directly to your categories and your numbers.
Now I help people get through that same rough patch faster, with someone in their corner instead of a forum thread. You won't get a call center or a rotating cast of coaches — you get me, every time, in a practice small enough that your budget is something I actually remember, not a ticket number.
my own YNAB budget
your real categories
Rebuilt my own budget more times than I can count. That's the training.
No client reviews yet — here's the experience coaching is actually built on.
Living inside my own YNAB budget — rebuilt, broken, and rebuilt again more times than I can count.
Taught budgeting fundamentals in small-group sessions before ever coaching one-on-one.
The people who trusted me with their real numbers before I called this a business.
Before you book
No to both — I'm not YNAB Certified and I'm not a financial advisor. What I bring instead is years spent actually living inside my own budget, rebuilding it after every stumble until it finally stuck. If you want someone who's sat exactly where you're sitting, that's the whole point of Margin.
No — Margin is coaching, not software. You use your own YNAB subscription; I help you set it up, troubleshoot it, and keep it working. There's no separate Margin app or dashboard.
Not at all. Some clients come in brand new to YNAB, others have used it for years and just need a reset. We start wherever you actually are. If you want to get a head start, YNAB offers a free 34-day trial — no credit card required.
Most people leave the first session with a budget that finally matches their real spending. The bigger shift — actually trusting your numbers — usually builds over the first month or two of check-ins.
Yes — a good number of clients budget as a couple, and sessions work the same way with both partners in the room (or on the call).
That's genuinely one of the easier starting points — there's no old system to unlearn. We build your categories from scratch around your real bank activity.
Absolutely. Most ongoing clients actually start with a single Jumpstart session and decide to continue from there — nothing is locked in upfront.
If you want to talk it through first, book the free intro call — no pressure, no pitch. If you already know you want the Jumpstart, book it directly: if it doesn't land, I'll refund it. No argument.
Cost shouldn't be the reason you don't get help. If money's tight, say so on the intro call — we'll figure out what's possible together.
Not necessarily. Video (Zoom) or phone works for most clients, but if you're near Dover, OH, we can meet in person instead.
